Topic: Hazrat Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) and the Mirror

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficient

Hadhrat Anas bin Maalik(radhiyallahu anhu) [May Allah be pleased with him] narrates that once Hazrat Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) came to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) [Peace be upon him]with a mirror. On the mirror was a tiny black spot. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked: “Oh Jibraeel! What is the meaning of this mirror you came with.” Hazrat Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) replied that this mirror was the symbol of the Day of Jumah [Friday]. The black spot on the mirror is that brief moment which comes every Jumah in which Allah Ta’ala accepts every dua (prayer). Allah Ta’ala has given us greater ranks over previous Ummats (nations) by virtue of Jumah. On this day there is such a moment that Allah Ta’ala accepts every dua. Allah Ta’ala does not reject any dua a person makes on this moment. Generally people do not understand what is meant by the acceptance and rejection of duas. Allah Ta’ala only rejects the duas of those people who are grossly disobedient. They have no intention of reforming themselves and have no intention of following Allah Ta’ala’s laws. Their entire life is only involved in disobedience.

So the duas of such people are not accepted. But, Allah Ta’ala accepts the dua of every other Mumin (Believer). Acceptance of the dua does not means that Allah Ta’ala will give us what we ask for. Because we do not know whether what we are asking for is good or bad for us. Something may look good for us in this dunya (world) but is could be bad for us in this dunya and the Aakhirat {Hereafter). Allah Ta’ala says in the Quraan that amongst the people there are those who make dua and say if Allah Ta’ala gives us of His wealth in this dunya, then most certainly we will give sadqah (charity) in his path. The more He gives us, the more we will give in His path and then we will become very pious. Then when We give them of our wealth, we open the doors of rizq (sustenance) for them, then they turn away and show their backs towards Allah Ta’ala.

Allah Ta’ala knows how much wealth He must give to whom and how much knowledge to whom. People do ask Allah Ta’ala for wealth and Allah Ta’ala gives it to them and it destroys them in this world and the Hereafter. This is because the person did not ask for it sincerely. Allah Ta’ala sometimes accepts our duas at a later stage, or He gives us something better in return or He wards off a calamity which was to befall us, or He gives us the reward of it in Jannat (Paradise).

Hazrat Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) tells Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that this day of Jumah is very close to the Day of Abundance. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked him what the Day of Abundance means. Hazrat Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) says that Allah Ta’ala has created a special valley in Jannat. In this valley there are dunes. Not dunes of sand but dunes of musk.

Musk is an extremely expensive and high quality fragrance which is extracted from the stomach of the buck. Look at the kudrat (power) of Allah Ta’ala as how He created it a place of impurity. When Allah Ta’ala sent Aadam (alayhis salaam) down to earth from Jannat, Aadam (alayhis salaam) laid down in Sajdah (prostration) crying. It is said for years Aadam (alayhis salaam) was in Sajdah and cried so much that the birds would come and drink of his tears. Once a buck came pass Hazrat Aadam (alayhis salaam) and stopped. He stood there admiring this new creation (Hazrat Aadam [alayhis salaam]) of Allah Ta’ala for a long while. Thereafter, this buck went back to the other animals. It was the very beginning of the world and there were no other human being besides Hazrat Aadam (alayhis salaam). At that time all the animals, even the wilds animals were on good terms with each other. There was no fitnah (evil), no anarchy in the world at that time. When all the other animals saw this buck coming, they were very surprised. They came to this buck as asked him what has happened to him, such a wonderful fragrance was emitting from him. The buck said he didn’t know about it. All he did was to make ziyrat (visit) Allah Ta’ala’s creature Hazrat Aadam (alayhis salaam) and now they were saying what a wonderful fragrance was coming from his body. Immediately all the animals rushed to make ziyrat of Hazrat Aadam (alayhis salaam). They came to him and stood around him for a while and then returned. When they returned they couldn’t perceive any fragrance in anyone besides this buck. So they consulted with this buck. This buck explained that there was a big difference. He went to make ziyrat of Hazrat Aadam (alayhis salaam) with ikhlaas (sincerity) and the others went there for a worldly reason, i.e. to gain the fragrance. There was no barkat (blessing) in there ziyrat. In this way Allah Ta’ala created this perfume of musk.

So in this valley there are dunes of musk. Every Jumah thrones of noor (celestial light) are spread. On these thrones are seated the Ambiyaa (Prophets). Then there are other thrones of gold, with precious stones from Jannat studded onto it, and the martyrs and the pious people are seated on them. The ordinary Muslims are seated on these dunes of musk. Together all of them recite the praises of Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala tells them to ask whatever they want. What else can they are for besides the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. Everyone will ask only the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala will inform them that He is please with them and He has given them place to live, in His abode. He has made all of them sacred and holy. Thereafter Allah Ta’ala will reveal Himself to them. In comes in a Hadith (tradition) that when Allah Ta’ala reveals Himself to the people of Jannat, they will all fall down in Sajdah deriving pleasure from the vision of Allah Ta’ala for 100 or 200 years. So much pleasure, will the people of Jannat, derive from Allah Ta’ala’s vision. The people of Jannat will treasure the Day of Jumah very much. They will wish every day to be the Day of Jumah.

The Day of Jumah is a day of Ibaadat (worship). At the same time it is a day of business. Business of this world, as well as of the Hereafter. Spend some time during the night of Jumah. The night of Jumahs starts from sunset on Thursday. The night is sacred so some time should be spent in Ibaadat. This special moment could be at any time, during the whole of Jumah, night or day.  Back to the top

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficient

It is narrated then when Shaikh Tastaree’s (rahmatullah alayh) janaazah was taken out, thousands of people gathered to witness this event. There was a lot of noise, people shouting, screaming, mourning, etc. because of the departure of this great Shaikh. A Yahoodi (Jew) who was 70 years of age heard the big commotion taking place outside his house and went to investigate. When he came out and viewed the scene, he called out to the people: “O People! What I am seeing, you cannot see.” The people asked: “What are you seeing which we cannot see?” He replied: “I can see the Makaa’ikh (Angels) descending from the heavens and spreading their wings over the janaazah of Hazrat Shaikh Tastaree (rahmatullah alayh).” Immediately he recited the Kalimah Shaadat and he embraced Islam.

When non-Muslims (kuffaar) are sincere, (you find among them sincere ones also. Many of them are sincere.) then Allah Ta’ala creates the circumstances for their hidaayat (guidance). They will get hidaayat before they will leave this dunya (world). Similar was case of the saahireen (magicians) during the time of Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam). Their entire life they passed in sahar (magic). Sahar is something that destroys the Imaan. When Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) came with the mujizaa (miracle) of the asaa (staff) that would be transformed into a huge serpent and his hand would glitter after taking it out from under his kurtah (garment). His hand would glitter to such en extent that no one could look directly at it. Firoun and his men said that Hazrat Musaa and Haroon (alayhimus salaam) are expert magicians. At that time of Firoun, it was the age of sorcery. Magic has reached its height. Firoun gathered all the top magicians, dozens of them, and a festival day was set. On the festival day the entire population gathered in the arena to witness the expected defeat of Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) at the hands of the magicians.

In the arena, Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) alone on one side and dozens of magicians on the other side. This is Allah Ta’alas way, always choosing a small number from the people of truth for all the people of falsehood. When the magicians saw Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) a fear when into their hearts. They could see that this man is not a magician. They were experts and take an expert to recognize another expert. So they asked Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) if they should begin or will he begin the magic act. Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) told them to begin with their act. He also added that whenever a magician came along to challenge him, that magician would fail in the end.

When the magician cast down their rods and ropes, thousands and thousands of snakes, huge snakes, appeared on the scene. So many snakes made the scene frightening and Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) became scared. Allah Ta’ala revealed to Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam): Don’t fear, throw what is in your hand and it will destroy whatever they are defrauding.

Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) cast down his staff and it changed into a huge serpent. This huge serpent gulped down and swallowed all those other snakes. Everyone witnessed this act. The arena was cleared of the thousands of snakes. Immediately the magicians fell down in sajdah (prostration). They knew what Hazrat Musaa (alayhis salaam) demonstrated here was not magic. In sajdah they proclaimed: “We bring Imaan in the Rabb (Lord) of Musaa and Haroon.” They mentioned specifically the Rabb of Musaa and Haroon because Firoun also called himself a lord. In order to convey to Firoun that when we say Rabb, it is not meant for you but for the Rabb of Musaa and Haroon.

Firoun was disgraced and in anger said: “You believe in Him before gaining my permission? I will show you who is sterner in punishment. I will have you hung in trees and have your legs and hands cut off.”

They said Firoun can do whatever he wants. It is said that they not only became Muslims but instantly became Auliyaa (very pious Muslims). This was the guidance from Allah Ta’ala. Their Imaan was so strong although they did not have one Salaat or one good deed to their account, only the guidance from Allah Ta’ala (when they saw what Hazrat Musaa’s [alayhis salaam] serpent did). The former magicians told Firoun they make dua unto Allah Ta’ala to forgive them for their past but he (Firoun) has only a little power on this earth. Firoun carried out his threat and had them hanged from tree, cutting off the legs and hands.

It is said that when Hazrat Sal (rahmatullah alayh) was born, he was fasting. He didn’t drink anything from his mother until iftaar (breaking the fast at sunset) time and the day he died he was also fasting. He came into the dunya while a saaim (fasting person) and departed from this dunya as a saaim, and he was united with Allah Ta’ala in such a state when he did not yet make iftaar.

Every Mu’min should have this desire to leave this dunya in a state of Ibaadat (worship), either while fasting, or in Salaat, or in Tilaawat (reading) of the Qur’aan, or in Thikr (remembrance of Allah Ta’ala), or in the state of wudhu (celestial purity), etc. It does not require much struggle against the nafs (lowly desires) to remain with wudhu throughout the day. If your wudhu breaks, spend a few minutes to make wudhu. Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that wudhu is the weapon of a Mu’min. A person who dies in the state of wudhu will Insha’Allah (Allah Ta’ala willing) get the rank of a martyr.

Hazrat Sufyaan Thauri (radhiyallahu anhu) on the night he died, took about 60 times wudhu, as a result of his inability to keep his wudhu. He was very weak. His close followers use to hold him upright so that he could make wudhu. They told him that throughout his life he had wudhu and it is forgiven at this stage for him to have wudhu. He refused and said that anytime now he will meet his Creator and he wants to be in a state of purity i.e. with wudhu. They go through this because they know the return they will get in the Hereafter.

Once Hazrat Sal (rahmatullah alayh) was sitting with his companions when a stranger passed by. Hazrat Sal (rahmatullah alayh) looked at this stranger and told his companions: “That man is a man of mystery.” He had divine mysteries of Allah Ta’ala with him. When Hazrat Sal (rahmatullah alayh) made this statement this person disappeared from sight. A few years later, after Hazrat Sal (rahmatullah alayh) died and was buried, one of his companions was sitting by his qabr (grave) in muraqabah (contemplation) when he suddenly saw this stranger again. He called out: “O Khajah (respected person)! Sal who is buried here said that you are a man of mystery. So reveal to us some of your knowledge so that we can also benefit there from.” This person looked towards the qabr of Hazrat Sal and said: “O Shaikh! Tell them”. Out from the qabr came the voice of Hazrat Sal (rahmatullah alayh) reciting the Kalimah ‘laailaaha illallah wahdahu lashreekala’ Then this person asked: “O Sal! Does the qabr of the person who departed from this dunya with the Kalimah brighten up his qabr?” Hazrat Sal (rahmatullah alayh) replied from the qabr: “Undoubtedly the qabr of the one who recites ‘laailaaha illallah…’ is brightened with noor (celestial light).”

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Rejuvenate your Imaan by reciting laailaaha illallah.” The heart that is devoid of Thikr is like a stone. Allah Ta’ala says that the hearts become hard like stone and even harder. The place for a hard heart is jahannum. This Kalimah of laailaaha illallah will brighten up the heart just as it brightens up the qabr.  Back to the top

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficient

Hadhrat Fakeeh Abu Laith Samarqandi (rahmatullahi alayhi) narrates an incident in which there is much lesson. In all episodes or stories of the Deen there is a lesson or lessons to be gained. The purpose of listening to waakiahs (stories) of the Deen, stories of the Ambiyaa, Auliyaa is to gain naseehat (lesson) so that we can better our lives. For this reason the Qur’aan narrates so many stories, so that we can purify ourselves. This is provided that a person sits in a bayaan with Ikhlaas (sincerity), and in the right frame of mind, and he will always gain naseehat which he can apply to his daily life.

Hadhrat Jibreel (alayhis salaam) narrates [this story to Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) so that he can narrated it to his Ummah (nation) and we all can derive benefit from it.] that there was once man, an aabid (worshipper) who lived on the peak of a mountain and spent 500 years of his time in ibaadat (worship). Human beings are a weak creation of Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala also says in the Qur’aan Shareef that insaan (man) has been created weak, but yet Allah Ta’ala has made some exceptions. Such as the ibaadat of some these Aabideen (worshippers) could be compared to the Malaaikh (Angels). Two reasons are given for this exception of man. The first is when Allah Ta’ala was about to create Aadam (alayhis salaam), Allah Ta’ala told the Malaaikh, I am about to create on earth, a Khalifah (referring to Aadam – alayhis salaam) to rule this earth on my behalf. The Angels were very surprised, but they did not reject it, as how Shaitaan did. They (the Angels) must have found out or seen in the Lowhi mahfooz a description of this new creation of Allah Ta’ala. The Angels asks, O Allah! Are You going to create on earth such a being who will spread mischief, anarchy, blood shed, etc. whilst we are here making Your thikr, glorifying You? They implied that if Allah Ta’ala wanted someone to enforce His laws on earth, they would be sufficient. Allah Ta’ala rejected their argument and said: “I know what you don’t know.”

Initially the Malaaikh looked on man with contempt. So Allah Ta’ala (amongst humans) set aside some of his bindah (servants) who will make such Ibaadat that the Angels will look on in surprise and admire the Ibaadat. Although the Ibaadat of the Malaaikh is superior, but the Malaaikh understands that this (man) is an exceptionally weak being. There is no difficulty for the Angels to carry out any form of Ibaadat. The Malaaikh have no nafs in them, no weaknesses, shaitaan cannot put waswassa in them, and there is no distraction for them. Whereas man with all his physical weaknesses, plus his greatest weakness which is his nafs, still makes so much ibaadat that the Malaaikh feel shy.

This Aabid stayed on a mountain that was surrounded by brack, salty water. It was an island in the middle of the ocean. Allah Ta’ala created a fountain of sweet water for this Aabid’s use and a beautiful pomegranate tree which yielded wonderful pomegranates like Jannat. Daily he would eat of that pomegranates and he would drink and use that water for his needs. This person made a dua that when his time comes for his maut, Allah Ta’ala must take his rooh while he is in Sajdah. What a wonderful nimat that is. How many people out of millions and millions you will find getting this nimat, of dying a painless death in sajdah. Allah Ta’ala accepted his dua.

Hadhrat Jibreel (alayhis salaam) continues that when he and the other Malaaikh would come from the heavens to the earth doing their various duties, which Allah Ta’ala imposes on them, after they completed their work and would pass by this buzrug, they would find him in sajdah. The greater part of his 500 years he spent in sajdah. Some Malaaikh, their ibaadat is only sajdah, others are only in qiyaam and others only in ruku, etc. When the Malaaikh would pass this buzrug, they would admire him because they know the weaknesses of insaan. If you see a tiny ant struggling with a lump of sugar on his back as he battles to walk, you also admire him, knowing how weak he is.

Hadhrat Jibreel (alayhis salaam) tells Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) that on the Day of Qiyaamat, after checking this buzrugs account, Allah will instruct the Malaaikh: “Take my servant into Jannat because of My Mercy.” One thing we must understand is that every human being has a nafs, and even if shaitaan is not there his nafs is a greater enemy than even shaitaan. Sometimes even great beings like this buzrug, develop ujub. Ujub makes you feel pride of your own piety. Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’aan: “Do not regard yourself as pious.” So, this buzrug will think that what has happened to his 500 years of ibaadat and that he is going into Jannat only because of Allah’s mercy. Now Allah Ta’ala will instruct the Malaaikh to set-up the scales of justice to weight his amaal. Allah Ta’ala will now compare this buzrugs 500 years of ibaadat against the favours which Allah Ta’ala bestowed to him. A persons ibaadat will be transformed into the currency of the Aakhirat. Just as here on earth we have money and we purchase our items, in likewise our ibaadat will become a form of currency in the Aakhirah.

After weighing this buzrugs ibaadat, it will be discovered that the 500 years of his ibaadat will compensate for the nimat of vision only and nothing else. What about all the other nimats that Allah Ta’ala give him? His ears, his hands, his feet, physical strength, etc.? Also the other nimats, outside the body? Now this buzrug stands dumbfounded. His 500 years of ibaadat could only pay for one nimat of vision. Allah Ta’ala on the Day of Qiyaamat will deal with us more with Rahmat than with justice. Since this buzrug has nothing, Allah Ta’ala will order the Malaaikh to take him to Jahannum (Hell). The Angels will arrest him and take him towards Jahannum.

He will be going for a long distance but will still be millions and millions of miles away from Jahannum. (They say the sun is 93 million miles from the earth, and people still die in a heat wave. If the sun is cast into Jahannum, it will be destroyed, so hot is Jahannum.) He will become beyond himself because of the heat and thirst. His tongue will hang out and he won’t know what is happening to him. Then Allah Ta’ala will order the Malaaikh to bring him back. Ushered in the presence of Allah Ta’ala and these few questions will be asked to him.

Allah Ta’ala will ask him “O my servant! Who has created you?”
The buzrug: O Allah! You created me.
Allah Ta’ala: This act of creating you, bring you out of pure non-existence into existence, was it the result of your amaal? Or was it the result of My Rahmat?
The buzrug: O Allah! No, it is purely because of your Mercy that you brought me into existence.
Allah Ta’ala: Who gave you physical strength and who gave you spiritual strength?
(Most people don’t even have the taufeeq of Imaan. We see so many intelligent kuffaar, but they don’t have Imaan. There are millions of Muslims who do not even perform their Fardh Salaah, although they have physical strength. In many ways we don’t have spiritual strength. We all know the greatness of performing Tahajjud Namaaz, but how many of us perform it? How many of us have the taufeeq to remain with wudhu and to perform two rakaats tahyatul wudhu after making wudhu? Although we can stand all day long in pursuing our worldly gains, but it is too difficult to perform two rakaats tahyatul wudhu, or to take wudhu when our wudhu breaks.)
The Buzrug: O Allah! It is only You.
Allah Ta’ala: Who delivered you on this island in the middle of the ocean. And in the middle of that brack salty water, who created the fountain of sweet water for you, and who created the tree from which you ate those pomegranates? Your dua was answered and your rooh was taken while you were in sajdah. Who did this?
The Buzrug: O Allah! Only You did this.

Allah Ta’ala narrated to this buzrug only some of His nimats. Allah Ta’ala says all this is the product of my Rahmat, and not of your amaal. And because of my Rahmat, I will send you now into Jannat.

Everything is dependent upon Allah Ta’ala’s Rahmat and nothing on our efforts. We must make effort, but to continue with our ibaadat is only because of Allah’s Rahmat.

Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) only saw Hadhrat Jibreel (alayhis salaam) twice in his original form and he (Hadhrat Jibreel -- alayhis salaam) was so huge, that he blocked out the entire horizon. He is exceptionally beautiful and has over 700 wings. When he flaps his wings, precious stones and jewels (not feathers) fall from his wings. Back to the top

Topic: Qasome (Oath)

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficient

Tonight we will discuss some masaail (laws) regarding qasome (oath). We all are aware of qasome (oath) but we are not aware of the laws regarding oath. People treat qasome very lightly. Infact we even find the little children, while playing ball, we find them taking oaths. For every little thing we take an oath. Little realising how important qasome is and what involves taking a qasome.

When you take a qasome, you are invoking Allah Ta’ala’s Name. And to invoke it light heartedly for every little thing is to show disrespect to the Name of Allah Ta’ala. To show disrespect to the Name of Allah Ta’ala is kufr. Kufr is such an act that expels a person from the Deen. But in spite of it being kufr, a person doesn’t become a kaafir with this type of kufr. Why, because at the time when a person takes a qasome even though it is light heartedly, for something which is unimportant, he takes it to emphasize his truthfulness. It is not taken mockingly, although it has the form of mocking, but in his heart he is invoking Allah Ta’ala’s Name in order to emphasize his truthfulness. Unlike other types of kufr, e.g., mocking at a teaching of the shariat. If someone makes a mock of the Islamic headgear (topie), or the beard, mocks at a person who wears his trousers above his ankles, or mocks at hijaab (purdah) or any teaching of Islam, he immediately become a murtadd. His Imaan is eliminated, his nikah breaks and he has to make taubah and renews his Imaan and nikah.

So this type of kufr (qasome) does not expel a person from the fold of Islam. We must understand not to take oaths lightly. A very bad or evil form of qasome (although it takes effect) is to take a qasome in order to promote your sales (in business). In order to convince the buyer of your truth, one takes a qasome. You may tell the buyer that this article cost you R100.00 and you are truthful in it. Now you take an oath to convince the customer of your truthfulness that you did pay this amount for it. Or you take an oath to convince the customer of the good quality of the merchandise. This is to use Allah Ta’ala’s Name very cheaply. It is not permissible to take such oaths. The worst type of qasome is called yamini ghmoos. It is taking an oath on a lie; something the person knows is false. He takes an oath saying he did it or did not do it, but in his mind he knows it is contrary to what he is claiming. This is yamini ghmoos, there is no kaffarah (penalty) for it. It is very close to kufr and the only thing one can do is to make taubah. Ask Allah Ta’ala to forgive one for that. For other forms of qasome which were violated, there is a kaffarah which has to be paid.

When an oath is taken, it has to be taken only in the Name of Allah Ta’ala and on no other being or object. Although a qasome is valid when taken on certain objects, it is not permissible. In most cases it is not valid if taken on any being or object. For example, one takes an oath on Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), or by the Kaabah, or by the heavens, or any other holy object, this renders it impermissible and also not valid. It doesn’t take effect at all. If one acts in conflict with it, then there is no kaffarah for it. If someone takes a qasome by the Qur’aan, although that qasome is not permissible but it is valid, i.e. it takes effect. The Qur’aan is an attribute of Allah Ta’ala and related directly to Him. If you act in conflict with this qasome, you will have to pay kaffarah.

If someone takes a qasome but he doesn’t use the word qasome, he says Allah is my witness, or I call Allah to witness I did or did not do this, is a valid qasome. If a person takes a qasome that if I do this then I will died as a kaafir, or I will loose my Imaan, or something to that effect, although it is not permissible to take such an oath, it comes into effect.

One takes an oath on something sinful, e.g. I will not perform Salaat, or I will not speak to my father, or on any sinful act, this qasome comes into effect but it is waajib (compulsory) to break that qasome. It is not permissible to adhere to this type of qasome. It will have to be broken and kaffarah be paid.

The kaffarah of a qasome is when one takes a valid qasome and broke it. Example, you said by Allah I won’t do such a thing and then you did it. The kaffarah is to feed 10 masaakin (poor Muslim people), each one has to be given 2 full meals, one in the morning and one in the evening. This is if you give them cooked food. You may also give them the uncooked food equivalent to the amount to be given in Sadaqatul Fitr, 2kg bread flour. You may also give them cash money which is equal to R7.00 (August 2002, South African Rands). One violated qasome is R70.00. It is not permissible to give this to one poor person. The kaffarah won’t be paid. If you give it all on one day, you will have to give it to 10 different poor people. You may spread it over 10 days and give it (R7) to the same person every day. You can also give 5 poor people today each R7 and give the same 5 tomorrow again R7. In short what it means is that you cannot give one poor person more that the sadaqatul fitr amount in one day.

You took a qasome and after taking it you decided to violate it. You cannot pay the kaffarah in advance. You will have to first break that qasome and then pay the kaffarah. If someone has many kaffarahs, maybe built up over a period of years and he never paid it, he will have to pay it until his last. If a poor person broke a qasome and doesn’t have money to pay the kafaarah, then he has to keep 3 fast (roza, saum). He has to fast for 3 days consecutively. If he kept 2 fasts and became sick, he will have to renew all 3 again. Should he have more that one qasome, e.g. he broke 10 qasomes. He doesn’t have to fast 30 days consecutively, only 3 days consecutively for each qasome. This applies to a person who cannot pay the kaffarah.

If a person reaches such an old age, close to maut, that he will not be able to discharge all his kaffarah, then it is waajib upon him to make a wassiyat and tell his heirs that he is liable for so many kaffarahs. It is waajib for his heirs to pay his kaffarah. But they can only pay from one third of his estate, even if this is not enough to cover all his kaffarah. This applies to kaffarah of Salaah and of saum also. They can use until one third of his assets to pay all his kaffarah.

Whatever the fitra amount is at the time of discharging your kaffarah is to be used. Not the amount when the qasome was violated.

One should not take an oath (or place your hand) on the Qur’aan in non-Muslim courts.

If you cannot remember if you broke a qasome, as a precautionary measure pay one kaffarah. If you send your kaffarah money to someone to distribute, maybe to an organization, then you must specify that it is kaffarah, so that they will know how to distribute it. Back to the top

Topic: Old Age

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficient

Hadhrat Faqeeh Abu Laith Samarqandi (rahmatullahi alay) explains the significance or virtues of old age. Old age itself is a nimat from Allah Ta’ala. It comes in the Hadith that Allah Ta’ala loves an elderly person, an old person. The meaning of Allah Ta’ala loving someone is that Allah Ta’ala’s Gaze of Rahmat, His Gaze of Forgiveness is more upon him provided that the old person fulfils the nimat of this old age. Just as all other nimats, one should not misuse this nimat of old age. Once a person is in old age, he should understand that he is very close to meeting Allah Ta’ala. Of the few days he has left, he should utilise it more to gain Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. This is to fulfil the nimat of old age.

About old age Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “The worst of your old people are those old people who imitate the young and the best of your young men are those who imitate the old people.”

Muhammad bin Suhail (rahmatullahi alay) said that he saw Hadhrat Yahya bin Aksum (rahmatullahi alay) who was an exceptionally great muhaddith of the early times (i.e. tabe tabieen) in his dream. And asked how Allah treated him. Hadhrat Yayha said that Allah Ta’ala summoned and addressed him: “O evil old man, you have committed many evil deeds.” Hadhrat Yahya who was a man on intelligence didn’t present to Allah Ta’ala his many years of teaching Hadith but said: “O Allah! I cannot say anything with regard to my evil deeds.” Allah Ta’ala asks: “Then what will you say?” He brought his knowledge forward and said: “O Allah! Hadhrat Abdur Razzak (a great Muhaddith) narrated from Zuhri (his ustaads were all Sahaabah) who narrates from Hadhrat Urwah and Hadhrat Urwah narrated from Hadhrat Ayesha (radhiyallahu anha) and she narrated this Hadith from Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) obtained this from Hadhrat Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) and he obtained it from You, ya Allah. There is no doubt in this strong chain of narrators and it is all I can say. You have said ‘At times I wish to punish an old Muslim man for his sins but because of his old age, I feel ashamed and I withhold my punishment.’ Ya Allah! This is the Hadith which I know and O Allah, I am also very old.” The meaning of Allah Ta’ala feeling ashamed is He becomes merciful, His Rahmat comes into play and He doesn’t punish that person.

In a similar Hadith Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Verily, Allah Ta’ala feels ashamed (he does not want to punish) a person with a white beard.”

When one buzrugs maut drew near, he still had a black beard. He made a wassiyat (bequest) to his son and said: “When I die and after you gave me ghusl, then you must pour white flour over my bread so that it looks white. So when Munkar and Nakeer sees me, they will remember tha Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and the questioning will be lighter on me.” This was a haal (emotional state) this buzrug was in.

Hadhrat Yahya said that Allah Ta’ala said: “What you have said is the truth.” Allah Ta’ala then ordered the angels to take him to Jannat, i.e. he will be going to Jannat. Allah Ta’ala looks for little excuses like this in order to forgive people.

Another similar incident is narrated about Hadhrat Waiz Abu Aamir (rahmatullahi alay). He is called waiz (lecturer) because he used to give a lot of waaz (lecturers). A buzrug saw him in a dream and asked him how he faired by Allah Ta’ala. He replied: “When I came forward Allah Ta’ala was angry at me.” Allah Ta’ala said: “You have committed a lot of evil while you were on earth.” Immediately he was over come with fear and said: “O Allah! I acknowledge that, but whenever I gave a bayaan I would always recite Durood Shareef.” Allah Ta’ala told the Malaaikah: “What he says is correct. He always recited Durood Shareef before his bayaans. Spread a throne for him here in the heavens and his audience henceforth will be Malaaikah.”

Once Hadhrat Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) came to Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and found him to be crying. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Hadhrat Jibraeel (alayhis salaam) came to me and informed me that Allah Ta’ala feels ashamed to punish an old man because of his old age.” This caused Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) to cry. Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “When Allah Ta’ala feels ashamed of the old man because of his old age, then why does the old man not have shame for his disobedience to Allah Ta’ala?”

Every old person should offer limitless gratitude unto Allah Ta’ala for this gift of old age. His tongue should always remain fresh with the thikr (remembrance) of Allah Ta’ala. In addition, the old person should be ashamed for the two angels who are with us (Kiraamunkaatibeen) recording our deeds. One should think that these angels are watching me and one should abstain from sin. No one knows when maut will come. Especially when you are old. When the crop is ready or the fruit is ripe, immediately it is cut. If it is not cut, it would go to waste. In other words, the old person is like fruit and should understand that any time now he will go. When a person is a child, he has hope of becoming a young person. A young person has hope of reaching old age. But after old age besides maut, what else is there?

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that when a person reaches the age of 40 years then Allah Ta’ala gives that person the protection against leprosy and insanity.

At the age of 50 years his hisaab (reckoning) is simplified in the Aakhirah.

When a person reaches the age of 60 years, then Allah Ta’ala gives him the taufeeq of turning towards Him. He inclines more towards the Aakhirat and the ties with the dunya are slackened. Many old people you will find when they reach that age, they turn towards Allah Ta’ala. Maybe during their lifetime they did many wrong things, but they were never rebellious. They committed evil, but every now and then made taubah (repentance). I myself have seen many such people. If he does not the taufeeq of turning towards Allah Ta’ala, then he is a loser in the Aakhirah. Allah Ta’ala is so angry at him that He doesn’t give him the taufeeq of coming towards Him.

When a person reaches the age of 70 years then Allah Ta’ala orders the Malaaikah to have special love for this person. In other words, they will make more dua of forgiveness for this person.

When a person reaches 80 years of age then the Malaaikah are ordered not to write any of the evil deeds he commits. They only write his goods deeds. This applies to such an old person who is on the Path of Allah Ta’ala.

When a person reaches the age of 90 years then he is totally forgiven. All his sins are forgiven and he is like a newborn baby. Such a can be assured that on Qiyamah his hisaab (reckoning) will be easy and he will pass. Allah Ta’ala also confers on him the right to intercede on those of his family who are to go to Jahannum, and Allah Ta’ala will accept his intercession. Allah Ta’ala records his name as Ameenullah (Trusty of Allah) and Aseerulullah fil Ard i.e. he is the prisoner of Allah here in earth.

When a person reaches such an age, which in the Qur’aan Shareef is called Afdhalul Umar (a weak age, it varies according to the person. Some people reach it at 50, others later.), and is unable to do all those acts of Ibaadat that he used to do when he was strong, then it is recorded on a daily basis as if he is still doing those acts of Ibaadat.

Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that this world is a prison for a Mu’min and a paradise for a kaafir.

A person is surrounded by so many evil forces, nafs, shaitaan, evil friends and so many others, that you always have to struggle. A person of 80 years is still a prisoner, but now he is a prisoner of Allah. For the short while he is on earth, he is under the special protection of Allah Ta’ala which will save him from many evils.

Old age is a wonderful nimat from Allah Ta’ala and we should appreciate it.  Back to the top

Amr bil maroof nahy anil munkar

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficient

Hadhrat Faqeeh Abu Laith Samarqandi (rahmatullahi alay) explains the importance of amr bil maroof nahy anil munkar (to instruct righteousness and prohibit evil). Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Everyone of you are Shepards. All of you will be questioned (on the day of Qiyaamat) with regard to your flock (family).”

Whoever has subordinates under him, or those who are in your jurisdiction it will be waajib (compulsory) upon you to make amr bil maroof nahy anil munkar. Everyone has someone uder him and it is his duty, to the best of his ability, to see that they follow the sunnat. It is the fathers duty to see to his flock (his wife and children). The mothers flock are her children. The flock of the shaikh are his mureeds. The ustaad is responsible for his pupils and the king or ruler is responsible for the entire country. Every citizen in the country is part of his flock and he is responsible for amr bil maroof nahy anil munkar.

The employer is responsible for his employees. If he has a Muslim worker then it is his duty to see that the worker carries out the Shariat while in his employ. If he (the worker) does not perform Salaat, the employer will have no valid reason on the day of Qiyaamah if he did not order his employee to perform Salaah. If the worker commits breach of his contract, immediately the employer will object and he will reprimand and rebuke him. But if the worker violates the laws of the Shariat, then the employer is not concerned. So everyone will have to answer to those who are his subordinates.

If a few people in the community are evil or they transgress the laws of Allah Ta’ala, then the punishment of Allah does not overtake the entire community. The punishment will be confined to the evil people. But if the evil become rife throughout the community and becomes like an epidemic, (like in these times where almost everyone is involved in transgressing and violating the Shariat) then the punishment comes on the entire community. Even if the community has pious people, everyone will be overtaken by the azaab from Allah Ta’ala. The azaab of Allah Ta’ala comes in different forms, e.g. earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, volcanic eruptions, etc. When the earthquake comes, it will not distinguish between the pious people and the evil people. It will take all of them. That is because the pious people abstained from this duty of amr bil maroof nahy anil munkar. As long as there are as such Ulama who carry out this duty of amr bil maroof nahy anil munkar, not caring of the criticism of the people, then Allah’s azaab will not overtake the entire community. Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’aan that they are not concerned with the insults of those who insult. The day when this amr bil maroof nahy anil munkar comes to a halt in that particular community and there are no people to command righteousness and to prohibit evil then the punishment of Allah Ta’ala becomes halaal for the entire community.

Hadhrat Fakeeh Abu Laith (rahmatullahi alay) says that Allah Ta’ala sent revelation to the Nabi Hadhrat U’sha bin Noon (alayhis salaam) that in his community (Bani Israel) Allah Ta’ala is about to destroy 61,000 people. Of these 61,000 people 60,000 are evil transgressors. Their transgression has reached a point of no return. Along with them are 1,000 buzrugs and pious people  (Ulama and Auliyaa) in this same community which is to be destroyed.

Hadhrat U’sha (alayhis salaam) was the servant of Nabi Moosa (alayhis salaam). After Hadhrat Moosa and Haroun (alayhimus salaam) departed from this dunya, Allah appointed Hadhrat U’sha (alayhis salaam) to be the Nabi.

The Nabi Hadhrat U’sha (alayhis salaam) made dua to Allah Ta’ala: “Ya Allah! It is understandable that the evil people will be destroyed, but what is the fault of these pious people?”

Allah Ta’ala replied: “These pious people did not prevent the evil people from their evil doings and left them to so as they pleased. The pious people because so accustomed to the evil that the evil of the deeds even left the pious peoples hearts. On top if that these pious people would even associate with the evil people and eat with them.” Like today we see all type of evil taking place and we don’t even worry about and we just accept it as part of our daily life. Those who openly violate Allah Ta’ala’s laws, it is not permissible to associate with them. We see today how the learned people mingle freely with those who violate Allah Ta’ala’s laws in the public and when such a situation develops then the evil of it leaves the heart. Even though they don’t actively participate in the evil but they give silent permission to it. Then Allah azaab comes and destroys them all.

Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’aan Shareef: “Beware of such a fitnah (azaab) which will not only overtake the trangressors.” So amr bil maroof is an essential duty that everyone should practice it.  No one can say that it is not compulsory on him. It is compulsory on everyone but in different degrees. It is not compulsory on everyone to utilise force and force someone to do something. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said in a Hadith that if you see evil being committed, you must prevent it (use force). [This applies to those who have the authority to use force, e.g. the sultan, king, government, father over his children, mother over her children, ustaad over his students, shaikh over his mureeds, etc.] Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that if you are unable to do that (use force) then use your tongue. I.e. you must speak against it in a proper way and nice manner. It does not mean that you must insult or speak harshly to them. Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) also said the noblest Jihaad is to proclaim the truth in the presence of a tyrant (cruel oppressive ruler). This does not mean that the person in proclaiming amr bil maroof he have to insult the ruler. It means that he have to go to the ruler, not stand in the street and shout slogans, and proclaim the haqq (truth) in his presence and then have sabar (patience) to whatever happens to him thereafter. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that if you cannot even use your tongue (for some reason of the other, you are unable to admonish someone) then at least in your heart you must hate or dislike that evil. This is the lowest stage of Imaan. If that dislike is not in your heart then there is no Imaan in that person.

Everyone has to make his amr bil maroof but nowadays you find neither the father makes amr bil maroof to his children, nor does the husband make amr bil maroof to his wife. Even the mother doesn’t make amr bil maroof to her children. For this reason you find today the children have become the parents, and the parents have become the children. The parents are scared to say anything to their children. Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said there will come a time when the mother will be the slave of the daughter i.e. the parents will become the slave of the children. The children will dominate the parents. Back to the top
